Sclerotherapy Varicose Vein Treatment

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of some varicose and most spider veins. No matter how a varicosity is treated or by which method, there is a chance of recurrence. If this happens it is usually minor and can be handled in a trip to our office. We recommend a yearly follow up visit post treatment.

Like all medication, there is a possibility of complications. They are generally mild. Sometimes smaller vessels will develop at the site of the larger treated one. These smaller vessels can be easily treated with a few injections. Sometimes there are a few that we cannot eliminate.

  • After injecting a vein there will develop a brown discoloration. This will fade within a few months to a year. Occasionally some staining will remain.

  • Allergic reaction, although a possibility, is highly rare. Usually presents itself in the form of a rash or hives. Although respiratory problems have been reported, we have not encountered this. If this should occur we are equipped to handle the situation.

  • With injected larger veins you will notice a lump beneath the skin. This is normal and to be expected. It will disappear within a few months. Tenderness is also normal.

  • If the solution is not directly injected into the vein & infiltrates the surrounding tissue, a small slough can occur. This results in a scab that may potentially scar. This is very unusual however, we want you to be aware of every possibility.

  • Diabetics have a risk of infection. If this happens it can be treated with antibiotics.

  • Although there are no complications reported with injections during pregnancy, we prefer not to inject if you are pregnant or nursing. (However, if a ligation is needed, then treatment can be rendered while pregnant.)

  • Injecting a larger varicosity will markedly decrease the chance of superficial or deep phlebitis. (Blood clot in the vein.) However, there is a chance of this occurring.

  • If you have any concerns about the above do not hesitate to ask. We thoroughly believe treatment will make your legs feel and look better. We are happy to discuss any problems, if any, at all times.

Please feel free to contact us if you have additional questions.
