What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are abnormally enlarged blood vessels in which blood is pooled. They usually are bluish in color and may appear twisted. They are very common on legs, especially among women. The tendency to develop varicose veins is thought to be linked to heredity. Women, especially those who have had children, and men and women who spend a lot of time standing seem to be most susceptible to developing varicose veins.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are smaller veins that appear as bluish or reddish lines just under the surface of the skin.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure that involves injecting a special FDA approved solution into the vein. The solution is called Sotradecol and has been effective for over 50 years.

The solution causes the walls of the vein to stick together, preventing the blood from pooling in the vein and thus forcing the blood flow from the dysfunctional vein to veins that are functioning efficiently.

What is EVLT Laser?

EVLT is the latest laser procedure. It is a minimally invasive laser procedure performed right in the office. It is used to eliminate the larger varicose veins located in a specific area. The veins are located via ultrasound guidance. After local anesthetic is applied a thin laser fiber is inserted through a tiny entry point, usually around the knee. Laser energy is delivered to seal the faulty vein. If you are a candidate for the EVLT laser procedure we will discuss this with you at your visit.

What is Ligation?

Also a non-invasive office procedure, ligation is used to disrupt or tie off a vein. Simple office testing will determine if you require any ligations. It is done to disrupt the flow of blood feeding into other areas. The procedure consists of marking your leg at the areas where there are points of maximum reflux. (Reflux means the backflow of blood down the leg.) A local anesthetic is used and then the area is tied off, or stitched at the perforating vein.

What to expect at your first visit:

Once you have scheduled a consultation with our office we will be mailing you a confirmation packet. Please read and complete these forms and bring them with you at your appointment time. You will also find additional information enclosed that reviews our services and treatments.

Your first appointment is for a complete evaluation and will take approximately one hour. (There are no treatments done at the time of an initial consultation or re-evaluation.) We request that you bring a pair of short shorts, skirt or bathing suit so you will be comfortable. During this visit we will take a complete medical history & perform some non-invasive testing. We will then review the results with you and possible future treatments with our facility. Should you need treatments we will review what course of treatment is best, what to anticipate, what results you can expect and also insurance information & coverage. If your insurance requires any type of prior authorization or pre-certification we will be happy to do that for you. If your insurance is not going to cover the treatment we will be happy to review any fees you will incur.
